No milk pancakes

When it comes to making pancakes, most recipes call for milk. However, if you’ve recently decided to cut milk from your diet, or, you’ve just promised the kids pancakes and you’ve just noticed you’re out of milk, there is good news.

You can make pancakes with no milk.

In fact, it is quite easy to make a pancake recipe without milk especially if you have some of the items on this list of substitutes for milk that you can use in your favorite pancakes.

Milk is integral in many pancakes recipes because it helps to add some flavor to pancakes. So, if you’ve decided to make milk-less pancakes, you will need to find a way to add some flavor to an otherwise flavorless recipe.

A simple way to make sure that pancakes made with no milk still taste great is by adding in extra butter, salt and sugar, as well as some extracts to make the pancakes more flavorful.

So, let’s find out all there is to know about making pancakes with no milk below.

FAQs about pancakes made with no milk

Can you use water instead of milk to make pancakes?

Yes you can! In order to do so, simply replace the milk in the recipe with equal parts water, then add some ingredients that will add flavor.

These ingredients to add flavor include sugar and salt, as well as butter.

These make the pancake batter really rich and flavorful! Without adding the extra flavor, the water pancakes will not taste great.

What happens if you don’t add milk to pancakes?

Milk adds flavor, while also helping to dissolve the dry ingredients for the batter.

Besides flavor, milk is used to add smoothness and also improves the golden brown color of pancakes due to the sugar contained in milk.

Therefore, expect for milkless pancakes to be lighter in color than pancakes with milk when cooked.

Milk also makes pancakes more dense, so expect the pancakes without milk to be lighter and more airy than your average pancakes with milk added.

However, if you did not cut milk out of your diet, and you simply just ran out of milk and noticed this at the very last moment, then here are some other easy substitutes you can use to make pancakes:

  • Soy milk

  • Yogurt

How to add flavor to milkless pancakes

I’ve mentioned flavor a lot when it comes to making pancakes without milk in this article. And with good reason too.

If you’ve never made pancakes with just water before, then you many not understand that simply substituting the milk in the recipe with equal parts water will not cut it.

In fact, you may be quite disappointed with the results of only doing that.

This is so because flour, water, a small amount of butter (say 1 tablespoon), baking powder, sugar and salt, results in pancakes that are flat and tasteless.

In order for the pancakes to taste delicious, you actually have to increase the ingredients that add flavor to replace the flavor that was taken away when you replaced the milk with tasteless water.

As such, it is important to ensure that you add a ¼ teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar for every 1 cup of flour you use.

You also have to make sure to increase the butter in any pancake recipe where you’ve substituted the milk for water. I personally like to add 3x the butter as butter plays a very important role in making no milk pancakes taste better.

Besides butter, sugar and salt, here are a few more flavor options to make your pancakes taste good:

  • 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup extract
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup of blueberries
  • 1 extra tablespoon of melted butter
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons of peanut butter

You can also use some of these pancake toppings to add more flavor to these pancakes.

Storing pancakes made with no milk

If you have any leftover no milk flapjacks, then you can store them in the fridge in an air tight container for up to 5 days. This pancake recipe without milk includes an egg which is perishable. Therefore, once stored in the fridge, you should not use them past the 5 days.

Can I freeze no milk pancakes?

These pancakes can be easily frozen as well. First, place the pancakes on a baking tray in a single layer, then freeze for 1-2 hours.

Once the pancakes are frozen, remove them from the tray, then place them in a freezer bag, seal and freeze for up to a month.

To reheat, remove from the freezer bag, and reheat in the microwave or toaster.

Final thoughts on this pancake recipe without milk

This easy milk free pancake recipe is something that was quite easy to perfect, and, while we don’t always make these pancakes at my house, as my family enjoy their denser pancakes with milk, they have come in handy a few times when I’ve ran out of milk!
