Alfredo sauce is a type of creamy sauce made from butter, heavy cream, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasonings, and sometimes even nutmeg. It is widely used for pasta, as a dip, and for having roasted vegetables.

Many people enjoy using store-bought Alfredo sauce since it’s easy, convenient delicious, and almost always available. However, if you can’t find Alfredo sauce where you are at the moment, or you just want something different, you may be wondering how exactly you can replace Alfredo sauce while keeping that delicious flavor it imparts in your dish.

Today I’m sharing some more information about Alfredo sauce, specifically ways to replace this sauce in cooking.

Best substitutes for Alfredo sauce

Homemade Alfredo sauce with heavy cream

Can’t find any Alfredo sauce in your area? Or maybe you’re just tired of the store-bought version of Alfredo sauce and you want something different.

In this case, the perfect substitute for Alfredo sauce would be your very own homemade Alfredo sauce recipe made with heavy cream. This recipe is perfect if you don’t mind all the creaminess and extra calories.

To make enough Alfredo sauce for 1 pound of pasta, you will need ¼ cup butter, ¾ cup heavy cream, 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1 cup of Parmesan cheese, ⅛ teaspoon of salt and black pepper each, ⅛ tsp thyme, ⅛ tsp nutmeg and ⅛ tsp of cinnamon.

Add the butter and minced garlic to a large skillet and let the garlic cook for about 30 seconds. Then add the heavy cream into the skillet and simmer on low heat for 1-2 minutes. Next, whisk in all the seasonings and simmer for 2 more minutes. Lastly, add the grated Parmesan cheese and whisk until it all melts. Then serve.

A good substitute ratio is 1:1. Meaning for every 1 cup of store-bought Alfredo sauce, replace it with 1 cup of homemade heavy cream Alfredo sauce.

Also, beware that 1 cup of Alfredo sauce is enough for every pound of cooked pasta.

Alfredo sauce with half and half

Another replacement for Alfredo sauce is a DIY Alfredo sauce made with half and half. In this case, the Alfredo sauce will be thinner, but still creamy enough to enjoy. This kind of sauce will also be slightly tangier and have fewer calories.

You will need 2 tablespoons of butter, ½ cup half and half, ¼ cup cream cheese, 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1 cup of Parmesan cheese, ⅛ teaspoon of salt and black pepper, ⅛ teaspoon of thyme, ⅛ teaspoon of nutmeg and ⅛ teaspoon of cinnamon.

To make it, add the butter and minced garlic to a large skillet and cook for 30 seconds, then add the half and half and simmer. Then, add the cream cheese and use the back of a spoon to break it up until it’s fully melted and well combined with the other ingredients in the skillet.

Next, add the salt and pepper, thyme, nutmeg, and cinnamon, and simmer on low heat for a few more minutes.

This is enough to make 1 cup of alfredo sauce with half and half and is ideal for 1 pound of cooked pasta.

Also, a 1:1 conversion ratio is good here. This means that for every 1 cup of alfredo sauce a recipe calls for, use 1 cup of this DIY alfredo sauce as a replacement.

Alfredo sauce mix is a mix of cheese, herbs, spices, and some other ingredients that make for a very flavorful Alfredo sauce.

I’ve used the Alfredo sauce mix from the brand Knorr, so I recommend it as a great option worth trying.

To use it, simply add the contents of the packet into a skillet, together with 1 ¾ cups of milk -any kind of milk that is unsweetened and unflavored will work here- and 1 tablespoon of butter. Simmer on low heat for a few minutes and serve!
